Deep-half guard to single-leg X guard transition.
Often, single-leg X guard is referred to as “straight ashi guarami”. At times I use the terms interchangeably, but when the focus is on sweeping or transitions, I tend to refer to it as single-leg X guard. On the other hand, when the focus is on foot-locks, I tend to refer to it as straight ashi gurami.
Key details/concepts: Keep yourself safe first in deep-half guard. Then to make the transition work keep your opponent off balance. The same to make the sweep work. Make sure your opponent is not comfortable (they are off-balance).
Deep-half guard to waiter sweep
Key details/concepts: Trapping the ankle and keeping it trapped is what gives you power and takes the power away from your opponent in this sweep. To get the sweep you have to first go towards their knee and then switch the direction of the sweep towards their hip. Finish the sweep by keeping your feet save and first establishing control of opponent’s hips.
